You talk about lightweight droplets that allow the fog to expand. Isn’t this one of those claims that’s impossible to prove?

That’s a great point. Do this: Get an aerosol can of Glade®, Febreze®, or any other conventional air freshener spray. Now, in a room that is well-lit enough for you to see the spray mist, shoot a half-second squirt of spray upward into the air in front of you. You can watch the mist immediately start settling toward the floor.

If you perform this same test with a Kleen Air aerosol, you will see a much finer mist briefly appear as a cloud, then disappear as the mist expands. (Note that pressing down too hard will cause the head to lock and the entire aerosol can will empty.)

What steps should be taken before setting off an M-5 fogger?

Preparation is easy. Place a small towel under the fogger to catch any overspray. Cover smoke detectors. Cover fishbowls, put away food and take pets out of the room.

How long do Kleen Air products take to work?

A single aerosol fogger can empties within 15 to 30 seconds. The active ingredients work on contact by physically attaching to airborne spores, smoke and other particles. Odors are eliminated once the neutralized particles fall to the floor or other surfaces. Organic spores are neutralized and deodorized.

Will Kleen Air products damage furniture, fabrics or other interior materials and finishes?

No. As particulates settle out of the air, a microscopic residue will be deposited on interior surfaces. This residue will not harm fabrics or finishes and is not generally visible to the naked eye. Any mist on glass surfaces or mirrors is easily removed with a dry cloth.

How soon after setting off the fogger may I enter a treated space?

You should allow at least two hours for the fog to dissipate.

Will the fogger harm pets?

No, the fogger will not harm pets. However, pets should be removed to another location before setting off a fogger.

Don’t room deodorizers and air fresheners eliminate mold and mildew odors?

No. Conventional room deodorizers and air fresheners don’t eliminate odors. They simply mask unpleasant odors with pleasant odors, usually from fragrances. Once the fragrance particles dissipate, the unpleasant odor is still present. The active ingredients in Kleen Air products actually attach to airborne mold and mildew spores, which permanently neutralizes their odor.

Will Kleen Air products eliminate mold and mildew odors even if mold and mildew are visible on walls or other surfaces?

Yes. Airborne spores and the accompanying odor will be eliminated after fogging. However, the odor will return the next time a surface colony of spores is disturbed and some spores become airborne. This is why it is important to clean visible mold and mildew off surfaces first, using appropriate cleaning products. Once surfaces are clean, use M-5 to neutralize the odor-causing airborne particles.

Can I just spray M-5 directly on a wall or other surface infested with mold or mildew ?

Yes. However, the active ingredients in Kleen air products are engineered to neutralize odors, not to destroy the root systems in surface-attached mold and mildew. Cleaning and—in some cases—painting surfaces infested with mold and mildew and then fogging the affected interior space is the best approach. And of course, it’s also a good idea to identify and remedy the moisture source that allowed mold or mildew to take root and grow in the first place.

Do Kleen Air products kill mold and mildew?

Kleen Air products are designed for odor removal and not for killing organisms, per se. Because our products are not currently registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as pesticides, we cannot publish statements about their effectiveness in killing mold and mildew.

Why aren’t Kleen Air products registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)?

EPA registration is not required for products designed to remove odors. We are working on versions of our products that would be primarily designed as surface pesticides, and we would naturally seek EPA registration for any products intended primarily to kill mold and mildew on surfaces.

What if some of the M-5 spray gets on my skin or into my eyes?

Just wash with soap and water if you get some M-5 spray on your skin. It won’t hurt you. While M-5 spray can cause discomfort and temporary irritation on contact with the eyes, there is no risk of tissue damage or other harm. Just rinse your eyes thoroughly with water and you will be fine.

How do we determine the correct number of foggers to use if the space we need to treat is larger than 600 square feet?

There is no hard and fast rule because a lot depends upon the density of air contaminants within the space to be treated. Just follow the general rule of one fogger for each 600 square feet and understand that you may need to adjust this ratio for rooms with an unusually high degree of airborne contaminants. Also, be sure to try to roughly center foggers within spaces to be treated, but place multiple foggers far enough apart to ensure even distribution of the fog throughout a space.

Most of our customers use Kleen Air products to treat the same or similarly sized interior spaces on a periodic basis (e.g., hotel rooms and meeting spaces, restaurants and bars, health spas and locker rooms, office buildings, public restrooms), so you’ll probably have a good answer to this question after one or two treatments of your larger spaces.

Why do you caution against setting off a fogger in confined spaces like closets and small bathrooms?

The carrier in the aerosol is flammable. This is not a concern in normal use. However, in a small, confined space like a closet, releasing an entire can could produce such a dense concentration of the carrier that a spark might cause the carrier to ignite. You can safely use the M-5 fogger in a closet or small bathroom by squirting a couple quick puffs of spray into the space.

Why do you recommend turning off lights, electrical appliances and devices, and ignition sources like pilot lights before setting off a fogger?

As discussed above, the carrier in the aerosol is flammable. In normal use, the concentration of M-5 aerosol is so low that the risk of combustion is insignificant. However, these precautions will prevent a problem if foggers are misused; for example, by simultaneously setting off too many foggers for a particular space, or by setting off a fogger too close to a potential combustion source.

If concentration of the fog is a safety concern, is it safe to release an entire can of the M-5 fogger in a hotel room smaller than 600 square feet?

Yes. A single can of M-5 is safe for any size hotel room.

The M-5 fogger works great, but we don’t care for the smell after the fog dissipates. How can we get rid of this odor?

This faint residual odor is a byproduct of a key ingredient that makes M-5 so effective. Simply allowing the air to settle for a few hours after fogging usually solves this issue. However, you can also follow up with a short burst of our D-4 deodorizer, preferably at least two hours after setting off the M-5 fogger. The two hour delay is recommended because the deodorizer in our D-4 spray contains acetone, which actually cancels the effectiveness of the M-5 fogger if sprayed too soon.

Why don’t you just add a pleasant fragrance to the M-5 fogger?

The short answer is that no single fragrance is pleasant for everyone. You may prefer vanilla, while another hotel guest or car renter may prefer a floral scent—and may even have a negative reaction to vanilla. The best smell for a guest walking into a hotel room or a renter opening the door to his or her rental car is no smell. We’ve probably all experienced the natural reaction of walking into a room with a strong fragrant aroma and immediately wondering what the fragrance is hiding.

Can we order the M-5 fogger with a fragrance?

No. The M-5 fogger is not available in a scented version.

Can we use an M-5 fogger to eliminate odors in a rental car interior?

Our K-2 fogger is designed specifically for car interiors.
